Kool & The Gang

Kool & The Gang is an American group from Jersey City, New Jersey, active since 1964. Their music spans contemporary R&B, disco, electronic, funk, jazz and jazz-funk, and their history also includes soul, rock and pop elements. The group’s core early line-up includes brothers Robert “Kool” Bell and Ronald Bell, Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, Robert “Spike” Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, Woodrow “Woody” Sparrow and Ricky Westfield, and they go through many personnel changes over time.

Early recordings and breakthrough

After settling on their name, the band signs to De-Lite Records and releases its debut album, Kool and the Gang, in 1969. Their first major mainstream success comes with the fourth album Wild and Peaceful in 1973, which includes the US top-ten singles “Jungle Boogie” and “Hollywood Swinging”.

Commercial peak in the late 1970s and 1980s

After a period of decline, the group reaches a second commercial peak between 1979 and 1986, following work with Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James “J.T.” Taylor. Key albums from this period include Ladies’ Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980) and Emergency (1984), which is its highest-selling album in the United States, with two million copies sold. Major singles from this era include “Ladies’ Night”, “Celebration”, “Get Down on It”, “Joanna”, “Misled” and “Cherish”.

Later activity and recognition

Kool & The Gang continue to perform worldwide. The group appears as support for Van Halen in 2012 and tours for its fiftieth anniversary in 2014. Its catalogue includes 23 studio albums and almost 70 singles, and it sells 7.5 million RIAA-certified albums and 4.5 million RIAA-certified singles in the United States, with worldwide sales of 70 million albums.

The band receives two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards and a 2006 Music Business Association Chairman’s Award for artistic achievement. It is also inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and receives a MOBO Award for Outstanding Achievement, the Soul Train Legend Award, the Marian Anderson Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2018, the Bells, Brown and Taylor are inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the group receives its first Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination in 2024.
