Klangstof

Klangstof is an Amsterdam-based Dutch indie rock band that is active from 2015. The group centres on Norwegian singer, songwriter and producer Koen van de Wardt, with Erik Buschmann, Wannes Salomé and Koen van de Wardt listed as members.

Background and formation

Van de Wardt takes early inspiration from Radiohead’s OK Computer and uses it to develop his instrumental skills. As he begins writing his own material, he also studies at Hedmark University College in Norway. Before focusing on Klangstof, he plays bass with Dutch indie band Moss. He commits to the Klangstof project in 2014.

Releases and label work

Klangstof releases the single Hostage in 2016 and then signs to Mind of a Genius, the label associated with Zhu and Gallant. The band’s 2016 full-length Close Eyes to Exit includes Hostages and the title track. In 2017, the album leads to a remix release titled Klangstoff Remixes: Dusk.

Sound

The group’s music combines indie rock with dreamy, alt-indie textures. Its sound is described through references to Radiohead’s later work, the atmospheric style of Sigur Rós, and the rhythmic elements associated with Alt-J.
