Kayla Painter

Kayla Painter is a Bristol-based experimental artist and producer working in electronic music and ambient-influenced sound. She also works as a visual artist. Her output centres on layered soundscapes, bass-heavy compositions and live audiovisual performance, with bespoke visuals forming part of her shows.

Background and style

Painter develops a sound shaped by Bristol’s bass music heritage. Her music is often compared with the work of Burial, Nicolas Jaar, Mount Kimbie and Four Tet. She builds tracks from pulsing basslines, delicate samples and textured layers, and presents them in live AV performances.

Releases and performances

She self-releases her self-titled debut EP in 2012, which is followed by a remastered edition on Bit-Phalanx in 2013. That label also releases A Very New Everything in 2013. In 2014 she releases the single Railway Lines independently.

Painter performs at events including Southampton’s Pulse Festival and Bristol venue Thekla. She also supports HK119 in London and Afrika Bambaataa in Bristol.
