Karima Francis
Karima Francis is a singer-songwriter from Blackpool, United Kingdom, born in 1987. She is later based in Manchester. She also plays guitar.
Early career
Francis starts out as a drummer and backing vocalist in the Blackpool alternative and indie band Litterbug before moving into singing. Her own songs are described as self-written and relatively few in number, and her voice is noted for its range and power. She is compared by some to a young Joan Armatrading, while still being regarded as distinct in style.
Recognition and releases
In 2006, she performs six times at the In the City event in Manchester, attracting local and industry attention. In early 2007, she tours widely, both as a headline act and in support of other artists including Seth Lakeman and James Morrison. She also appears at showcase events connected to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
In spring 2007, Francis signs to the Newcastle-based independent label Kitchenware Records. Her debut album, The Author, is released in 2009. Her single Again is named iTunes single of the week in March 2009. In the same year, The Observer names her the number one act to watch.
