Justin Currie is a Scottish singer-songwriter from Glasgow. He is best known as a founder member of Del Amitri, and he stays with the band throughout its full history alongside Iain Harvie. He also performs as a solo artist in the UK.

Career

Currie starts out singing in Del Amitri in the 1980s. The group develops from an outsider status in the Glasgow music scene into a successful rock band with a mainstream sound. He is one of the group’s chief writers, and the band later enters a period of suspension after its fortunes decline and it is dropped by a record label.

In 2003, Currie fronts Button Up, a soul and jazz covers band, on a short tour of Scotland. The line-up includes Stuart Nisbet, Ross McFarlane, Gary John Kane and Andy May. From 2004 to 2006 he joins Eddi Reader, Colin McIntyre, also known as Mull Historical Society, and the folk group Blazin’ Fiddles for the Scottish project With Strings Attached.

Other projects

In 2004 Currie records A Terrible Beauty with Kevin and Jim McDermott of Simple Minds. He releases the comedy rock album anonymously under the name The Uncle Devil Show. In 2006 he appears as a special guest on Tom McRae’s Hotel Cafe Tour.

Solo work and style

Currie continues to tour as a solo musician. He records the solo album Rebound in 2005, and tracks from it are previewed online. His writing and public image are associated with dry humour and self-deprecation. He is also described as singing in a breathless style, packing many words into unusual bar lengths.
