Joy Orbison

Joy Orbison is Peter O'Grady, an electronic musician from Croydon, United Kingdom. His work spans dubstep, house, trip hop, UK funky and UK garage, and his sound also draws on oldschool jungle. He begins as a DJ at 13 and later moves into production, first making 8-bar grime loops in Fruity Loops before developing a style that combines house, disco and dubstep.

Career

Joy Orbison gains underground attention with his debut single, Hyph Mngo, which comes out on Hotflush Recordings in 2009. The track is widely played and is later voted number 23 in Resident Advisor's top 100 tracks of the 2000s and number one in Fact magazine's top tracks of 2009. He follows it with Brkln Clln on his own label, Doldrums, which he runs with Impey.

In 2010 he releases The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow on Aus Music. He is also known for collaborations with Boddika. His releases include work under the aliases Sin Falta and Sul.

Labels, clubs and later activity

O'Grady launches the label Hinge Finger, which he co-runs with Will Bankhead. He also begins residencies in 2012 at his London club night Just For You and at Manchester party meandyou. His connection to club culture and DJing remains central to his career.

Background and influences

He credits his uncle Ray Keith with introducing him to jungle and UK garage at a young age. His listed influences include J Dilla, My Bloody Valentine, GG Allin, Josef K and The Beach Boys.
