Howard Johnson
Howard Johnson is an R&B singer from Miami, Florida, and his work sits in funk, soul, boogie, contemporary R&B, electro-funk and pop soul. He begins as a local performer in Miami, singing in bars and clubs, before being discovered in 1977 by guitarist and producer Sandy Torano.
Niteflyte
Johnson and Torano form Niteflyte, a group signed to Ariola that releases two albums. The verified member listing identifies Niteflyte as the associated act. Johnson later leaves the group in the early 1980s to focus on a solo career.
Solo releases
His solo career begins on A&M Records with the 1982 album Keepin' Love New. The album is produced by Kashif, Paul Laurence Jones and Morrie Brown. Its track “So Fine” reaches number one in the US for one week and also becomes a top 50 single in the UK. Johnson follows it with Doin' It My Way, produced by The System, and then The Vision, released in 1985 and produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.
Later collaborations
In 1986 he records “Perfect Timing” as a duet with Donna Allen. Later he works with Regis Branson under the name Johnson & Branson, releasing one album together in 1989. The pair return in 2002 with Packed & Waitin on Soul Japan Records, which includes a re-recording of “So Fine”. Johnson also appears on the 2003 Soul Japan compilation Family Snapshots with two new tracks, “It's Time For Love” and “Take The Pain Away”.
