Hot 8 Brass Band
Hot 8 Brass Band is a New Orleans brass band active since 1995. It performs a blend of brass band music, funk, hip hop and jazz, and keeps a strong connection to the city’s traditional brass sound.
The group forms in 1995 under tubist Bennie “Big Peter” Pete, bringing together musicians from two earlier bands, the Looney Tunes Brass Band and the High Steppers Brass Band. Its line-up includes Bennie Pete, Keith Anderson, Phillip Armand, Terrell Batiste, Larry Brown, Tyrus Chapman, Harry “Swamp Thang” Cook, Sammy Cyrus, Dwayne Finnie, John Gilbert, Alvarez Huntley, Edward Jackson III, Jerome “Baybay” Jones, Dinerral Shavers, Gregory Veals, Joseph “Shotgun Joe” Williams, Raymond “Dr. Rackle” Williams and Derrick Tabb.
The band comes to wider attention after appearing in Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, which focuses attention on its mix of traditional marching music, hip hop and R&B. The group also receives media coverage in connection with the deaths of three members through handgun violence.
