Hooray for Earth
Hooray for Earth is a United States indie rock group active since 2006. The band is led by Noel Heroux and is associated with indie rock, indie, post-punk, chillwave and electronic music.
Background and sound
The group is based in New York City and is known for dense, layered soundscapes that combine aggressive textures with a softer emotional tone. Heroux describes the music as drawing on extremes, with uplifting feelings sitting alongside sounds that can feel daunting or unsettling. He also says he usually writes songs by hearing them fully in his head first, then trying to recreate them quickly in recorded form, which contributes to the band’s dense arrangement style.
Early release and albums
Hooray for Earth builds on the acclaim of its debut EP, Momo. Its album True Loves follows and is recorded over five weeks in New York, with much of the writing, recording and production handled by Heroux himself. Christopher Principe plays bass on parts of the record, Gary Benacquista contributes guitar and live synth parts, and Joseph Ciampini adds drum tracking. Chris Coady mixes the album.
Recording and collaborators
True Loves includes the lead single “True Loves”, which features neck-snapping drums, synths, breakdowns and Heroux’s vocals. The band’s sound attracts comparisons to MGMT, Yeasayer and Passion Pit, and it is noted for nimble guitars, progressive psychedelic elements and percussive movement. Hooray for Earth has also shared stages with Mission of Burma, Holy Fuck, Surfer Blood, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Oh No Ono.
