Hall & Oates
Hall & Oates are an American musical duo formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1970 by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Daryl Hall usually handles lead vocals, while John Oates plays guitar and provides backing vocals. The pair write most of their material, sometimes separately and sometimes together, and their official US releases credit them as Daryl Hall & John Oates, or Daryl Hall John Oates.
Style and commercial peak
Their most successful period runs from the mid-1970s through the late 1980s, when they develop a sound that blends rock, soul and rhythm and blues. Across their catalogue they work with a wide range of session musicians, while several players become regular parts of their recordings and touring line-up, including guitarist G. E. Smith, bassist Tom "T-Bone" Wolk, drummer Mickey Curry and multi-instrumentalist Charles DeChant. They also work frequently with songwriters Sara Allen and Janna Allen.
Hit singles and chart success
Between 1974 and 1991, 29 of their 33 singles reach the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40. Their six number-one singles are "Rich Girl", "Kiss on My List", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch". Other Top Ten hits include "She's Gone", "Sara Smile", "You Make My Dreams", "Family Man", "Say It Isn't So" and "Method of Modern Love".
They earn seven platinum and six gold album certifications from the RIAA. In the United Kingdom, they achieve two Top Ten albums and six Top 40 singles, with "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and "Maneater" reaching the Top Ten. Their releases spend 120 weeks on the UK Top 75 albums chart and 84 weeks on the UK Top 75 singles chart.
Recognition
Hall and Oates are inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2014, they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2016 they receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard ranks them 18th among the top Hot 100 artists of all time and sixth among the top duos or groups in 2018. VH1 places them 99th on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time in 2010.
