Gonzo
Gonzo is a name used by several different artists and bands across rock, electronic, hardcore, punk and related styles. The acts associated with it include an indie rock musician, a Hungarian band, a Romanian post-punk and alternative band, a German Schwabenrock band, a video game composer, an independent German multi-instrumentalist, Gonzo the Great from The Muppet Movie, a Dutch hardcore band, an Australian hip hop DJ and producer, an Italian porngrind band, and a Canadian funk and soul singer.
Hungarian band
One Gonzo is a Hungarian band formed in 2003 in Debrecen, in the eastern part of Hungary. Its early sound combines catchy vocals and danceable rhythms with 1990s Britpop influences. After a short break, the group returns in 2005 and develops a style that mixes old-school Britpop and alternative music with a more energetic post-new wave sound and indie-dance elements. The band completes a debut studio album titled Lost and Found and makes its first video for “Peeping Tom”, the first single from that album. The line-up is Stumpf Árpád on vocals and guitar, Varga András on guitar and backing vocals, Fazekas Zoltán on bass, Csatlós Pál on keyboards and sampler, and Horváth Róbert on drums.
Romanian post-punk / alternative band
Another Gonzo is a now-defunct post-punk and alternative band from Arad, Romania. It forms in autumn 2007 and fades away towards the end of that decade. The group plays several concerts during its life and develops a small but notable following. Songs are recorded for an underground demo release that does not appear, though a posthumous release of some tracks remains possible. The members are Paul Vida on vocals and guitar, Roxana Fânață on voice and guitars, Roxana Venter on keyboard, Lucian Ilisie on bass, and “Batman” on drums.
Schwabenrock band from Stuttgart
A separate Gonzo is a Schwabenrock band from Stuttgart, Germany. It first performs at a talent show in 1989 and later continues as a hobby band. Its discography includes Transpirativ (1993), Schwobaland (1995), En Dein’r Näh (1999), Live (2003), weit weit weg (2008), and 20 Jahre Gonzo live (2010), which is a live DVD.
