Glassjaw

Glassjaw is a Long Island, New York post-hardcore band formed in 1994 by singer Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck, who begin working together as teenagers. The group builds its reputation through demos, early EPs and a series of lineup changes, and becomes known for intense live performances and a strong following in the underground rock scene.

Early releases and rise

The band releases the EP Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 1997 before issuing its first album, Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, in 2000 on Roadrunner Records. That record helps establish the band beyond Long Island and earns it a dedicated grassroots audience. Glassjaw’s style influences the underground scenes in the eastern United States and the United Kingdom, as well as alternative metal, metalcore and post-hardcore.

Worship and Tribute and later activity

Glassjaw follows with Worship and Tribute in 2002 on Warner Bros. Records. The album reaches No. 82 on the Billboard 200, receives MTV airplay and earns a Grammy nomination. It differs from the debut and draws mixed reactions from fans. Afterward the band enters a long hiatus, though it issues the digital-only EP El Mark in 2005, made up of three unused songs from the Worship and Tribute sessions.

Line-up changes and side projects

In 2005, all members except Palumbo and Beck leave the band. Drummer Durijah Lang and bassist Manuel Ragoonanan Carrero later return, giving Glassjaw a workable four-piece line-up for shows. Palumbo also fronts the electronic pop-rock band Head Automatica, while former Glassjaw drummer Larry Gorman also plays in that group. Former guitarist Todd Weinstock performs with Men, Women, & Children.

Later releases and performances

Glassjaw returns with a run of vinyl and digital releases in 2010 and 2011, including All Good Junkies Go to Heaven, Jesus Glue, Stars, Natural Born Farmer and the EP Coloring Book. In 2010 the band debuts one of the singles at Hevy Fest in the UK, and a live video for You Think You’re (John Fucking Lennon) appears around the same period. In 2011 Coloring Book is given away free at a concert, and the band plays shows in London and Cardiff, headlines Soundfest, and appears on the Radio 1 / NME stage at Reading and Leeds Festival. It also plays a show supporting Rise Against’s Endgame tour and is scheduled for festivals including Sonisphere and Hevy Festival, with plans to perform Worship & Tribute in full at some shows.

Third album

After a long gap, Glassjaw releases its third LP, Material Control, in 2017.
