Georgia Ruth

Georgia Ruth Williams is a Welsh folk musician and harpist from Aberystwyth, with the verified origin given as Llantwit Major and Aberystwyth. Born in 1988, she is associated with Welsh folk music and works in the area of pop and indie as well as folk. Her music is described as being in the line of Foy Vance and Joanna Newsom.

Career

She graduates from Cambridge University in 2009 and later moves to London. For a period, she works in Leicester Square underground station while continuing to write songs. After a year in Brighton, she returns to Wales and is based in Cardiff.

Releases

In February 2012, she releases the In Luna EP on limited 10-inch vinyl through Gwymon. Huw Stephens plays songs from it on his Radio 1 show and describes it as “exquisite”, while Clash comments that there is little comparable to her in contemporary music. In May 2013, she releases her debut album, Week of Pines, on Gwymon Records. David Wrench records and produces the album over six days at Bryn Derwen studios in Snowdonia. The album includes the title track with a motorik rhythm, darker Eno-like arrangements, a Welsh sea shanty with reed organ, and more reflective folk ballads.

Awards and performances

In 2013, she receives the Welsh Music Prize for Week of Pines. She also performs at several festivals, including Glastonbury and the Swn Festival.
