Gama Bomb

Gama Bomb is a thrash metal band from Newry, Ireland. The group forms in 2002 and remains active, with a line-up that includes Philly Byrne, Joe McGuigan, Domonic Dixon and John Roche. Their sound is rooted in 1980s thrash metal, and their stated influences include Nuclear Assault, Kreator, Agent Steel, Sodom, early Slayer and early Megadeth.

Early years and live reputation

Gama Bomb builds a following in Newry and elsewhere in the UK through extensive touring and regular self-released recordings. Their first release is the demo The Survival Option in 2002, followed by the single The Fatal Mission in 2003. At this stage, frontman Philly Byrne often appears on stage in theatrical costumes, including chef, priest, pirate and unhinged scientist outfits, and the band’s shows frequently include a thrash version of the theme tune from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Albums, EPs and label releases

The band’s debut full-length album, Survival of the Fastest, first appears in a limited independent edition in late 2005 before being issued by Witches Brew in early 2006. Produced by Alwyn Walker, it includes live favourites that had not previously been widely available, along with bonus tracks from the earlier The Fatal Mission single on the 2006 edition.

In 2007 Gama Bomb releases its first EP, Zombi Brew, through Problem? Records. The release comes on 7-inch vinyl and is limited to 200 copies. It includes the title track, “Frightmare On Hell St” and a cover of The Dangerfields’ “Maniac”.

Gama Bomb signs to Earache Records in 2007. The label releases Citizen Brain in 2008, which receives strong reviews and is supported by extensive touring across Europe. In 2009 the band issues Tales From The Grave In Space, produced by Scott Atkins, and makes it available digitally for free. Its later albums include Untouchable Glory in 2015. Other releases listed include the 2010 single or EP Half Cut.

Lyrical themes and recognition

The band’s lyrics draw on horror, action and science-fiction films, cartoons and computer games from the 1980s, while also referencing classic heavy metal themes. They also write songs about social issues such as racism and global warming. Their writing often uses humour and unusual song ideas to parody familiar thrash metal subjects, with recurring themes including cannibalism, war, zombies, human sacrifice, ghosts and murder.

In 2009 Terrorizer magazine readers vote Gama Bomb best newcomer. The band also tours with Exodus and Overkill in early 2009, and appears on Earache’s Thrashing Like A Maniac compilation alongside acts including Evile, Municipal Waste, Short Sharp Shock and Send More Paramedics.
