Fuzz

Fuzz is a Los Angeles rock group active since 2012. The band consists of Ty Segall on drums and vocals, Charles Moothart on guitar and vocals, and Chad Ubovich on bass. It forms around Segall and Moothart, who begin working together in about 2011 before the project develops into a full recording band.

Style and approach

Fuzz plays heavy psych, noise rock, and psychedelic rock, with a sound that also fits garage rock and stoner rock classifications. The group’s songs draw on heavy metal pre-history, with clear references to Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix, and with further echoes of UK progressive blues bands such as The Groundhogs and of Australian guitarist Lobby Lloyde. Its music is described as dense, riff-led, and marked by a tense, paranoid mood.

Releases

The band first issues two singles: This Time I Got a Reason, released through Trouble In Mind, and Sleigh Ride, released through In the Red. By the time of the second single, the bass role is filled by Chad Ubovich. Fuzz then releases its self-titled debut album, Fuzz, recorded by Chris Woodhouse, who also works with Thee Oh Sees and The Intelligence.

Background

Fuzz is made up of California-born musicians who have known each other since high school. The group is described as coming out of a side-project phase and into a proper studio recording context after time constraints allow the members to focus on it. Its recorded work is shaped by the members’ interest in obscure older rock and metal records, and by a preference for abrasive, unsettling textures.
