Frozen Soul

Frozen Soul is a death metal group from Fort Worth, Texas, active since 2018. The band works in a style associated with old school death metal, drawing on a cold, heavy, slow-moving sound and themes of isolation and suffering.

Formation and early lineup

The project takes shape in 2018 after Chad Green and guitarist Michael Munday connect in Fort Worth and begin writing together. Green previously plays drums in End Times, a metallic hardcore band that moves toward death metal, and the early Frozen Soul material grows out of those sessions. The first full song written for the band is “Hand of Vengeance”.

Frozen Soul’s initial lineup includes Green, Munday, producer and former End Times guitarist Daniel Schmuck, bassist Samantha Mobley, and drummer Brady Tripp. The group later adds drummer Matt Dennard and guitarist Chris Bonner, while the wider membership also includes Raymond Macdonald.

Style and influences

The band describes a direct, blunt form of death metal that avoids technical excess. Its sound is linked to bands such as Obituary, Mortician and Bolt Thrower, with additional reference points including Grave and Texas heavy music more broadly. Green also cites earlier hardcore and crossover influences such as Trial, Ringworm, Integrity and Iron Age, alongside Metallica and Slayer.

Frozen Soul’s imagery and lyrics focus on coldness, pressure and bleakness, and the group’s logo and presentation are presented as part of that aesthetic. The band is also identified with Texas metal, alongside acts such as Pantera and Power Trip.

Releases and label work

Frozen Soul releases a four-song demo, Encased In Ice, in early 2019 on Maggot Stomp Records. The demo includes a cover of Mortician’s “Witch’s Coven” and later receives critical attention, including a place in year-end lists and recognition as one of the more anticipated metal releases of 2020.

The band then signs a worldwide deal with Century Media and records its debut full-length, Crypt of Ice, with Daniel Schmuck handling production and mixing. The album includes re-recorded versions of demo material such as “Encased In Ice” and “Wraith of Death”, alongside tracks including “Arctic Stranglehold”.

Live activity

Frozen Soul plays its first show in March 2019, opening for Blood Incantation and Necrot. It then tours the West Coast, later plays the Midwest with Plague Years, and follows with shows alongside Gatecreeper, Exhumed, Vader and Obituary. In early 2020 the band tours the East Coast with Steel Bearing Hand and plays Saint Vitus in Brooklyn.
