French for Rabbits
French for Rabbits are a New Zealand dream pop group from Canterbury, active since 2011. The group centres on Brooke Singer and John Fitzgerald, with Penelope Esplin also listed as a member. Their sound sits within dream pop and alt-folk, with songs that often use nautical imagery to tell stories of longing and regret.
Formation and background
Brooke Singer previously plays in the folk band Ragamuffin Children and the shoegaze group The O’Lovelys, while John Fitzgerald is a jazz guitarist. The pair form the project in 2011 after graduating from university.
Style and influences
Their music is described as dreamy and folk-based, with comparisons made to Marissa Nadler, Alela Diane and an acoustic Mazzy Star. The band’s lyrics and imagery often focus on the sea and related themes.
Releases and activity
In 2012, the group releases a lo-fi video for the song “Claimed by the Sea” and later issues a debut EP with the same title through the Wellington collective Home Alone Music. They also tour in New Zealand and perform alongside Jess Chambers, Darren Hanlon and Tiny Ruins.
Associated label and scene
Home Alone Music, the label behind their debut EP, is also associated with artists including Urbantramper, Timothy Blackman and City Oh Sigh.
