Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand is a Scottish rock band from Glasgow, active since 2001. The group’s music is generally associated with indie rock, alternative rock, dance-punk, dance-rock, art rock and indie pop, and it is also linked with the post-punk revival movement.

Formation and early line-up

The original line-up consists of Alex Kapranos on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards; Nick McCarthy on guitar, keyboards and vocals; Bob Hardy on bass; and Paul Thomson on drums, percussion and backing vocals. Kapranos and Thomson first meet while working together in Yummy Fur, and they begin writing songs together after meeting at a party. Kapranos also teaches Hardy to play bass. McCarthy joins after returning to Scotland from studying jazz bass in Germany.

The band name is chosen after discussion of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, with the members citing both the historical reference and the sound of the name, including its alliteration.

Releases and recognition

After signing to Domino Recording Company in 2003, the band records its debut album in Sweden with producer Tore Johansson. Its debut single, “Darts of Pleasure”, reaches number 44 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. “Take Me Out”, released later the same year, reaches number three in the UK and becomes one of the band’s best-known songs. It also charts in several other countries and receives a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

The self-titled debut album appears in 2004, wins the Mercury Prize that year and receives a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. The album later gains wider international attention, including in the United States, where it goes on to sell over a million copies. It also receives generally positive critical response and awards recognition connected with the band’s videos.

The second album, You Could Have It So Much Better, is released in 2005 and is produced by Rich Costey. It reaches number one in the UK Albums Chart and number eight in the United States. Singles from the album include “Do You Want To”, “Walk Away”, “The Fallen” and “Eleanor Put Your Boots On”. The album receives Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Album and for “Do You Want To”.

Tonight: Franz Ferdinand follows in 2009. It marks a move towards a more dance-oriented sound and includes “Ulysses”, “No You Girls”, “Can’t Stop Feeling” and “What She Came For”. A remix album from that project, Blood, also appears later in 2009.

The fourth studio album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, is released in 2013 after live performances of new material. In 2015, Franz Ferdinand collaborates with Sparks to form the supergroup FFS, issuing the album FFS and touring in Europe.

Line-up changes and later work

McCarthy leaves the touring and recording line-up in 2016. Julian Corrie and Dino Bardot join in 2017, with Corrie contributing to the recording of Always Ascending and Bardot joining after the sessions are complete. That album is released in 2018.

Thomson leaves in 2021 and is replaced by Audrey Tait, who has already performed live with the group. The band later releases “Billy Goodbye”, which appears on the compilation Hits to the Head in 2022. The sixth studio album, The Human Fear, is also part of the group’s catalogue.

Awards

Franz Ferdinand receives multiple award nominations over its career, including Grammy nominations. It wins two Brit Awards and one NME Award.
