Fleshgod Apocalypse

Fleshgod Apocalypse is an Italian death metal band from Rome, formed in 2007. The group begins as a project from Francesco Paoli, Christiano Trionfera and Paolo Rossi, and was previously known as Tyrannic Ethical Reconstruction, a death/thrash metal act. The band’s early line-up includes Paoli on drums, guitars and backing vocals, Trionfera on guitars, and Rossi on vocals and bass. Francesco Struglia later joins on drums, then leaves in 2008 because of changing personal interests and other commitments.

Career and releases

The band self-releases its demo Promo ’07 in August 2007 and then signs to Neurotic Records. Two songs from the demo later appear on the 2008 split The Da Vinci Death Code, shared with Modus Delicti, Onirik and Septycal Gorge. Fleshgod Apocalypse supports acts including Behemoth, Origin, Dying Fetus, Hate Eternal, Suffocation and Napalm Death on tour.

In late 2008, the band starts work on its debut album and leaves Neurotic Records in order to develop further as a group. It then joins Willowtip Records, while Oracles appears through Candlelight Records in Europe and Willowtip Records worldwide in 2009. The EP Maifa follows in 2010 and includes a cover of At The Gates’ “Blinded By Fear”. The track “Thru Our Scars” points toward the later use of Paolo’s clean and operatic vocals.

The second album, Agony, gains wide attention for combining symphonic and operatic elements with the band’s technical death metal style. A video is made for “The Violation”, which also incorporates the outro of “The Deceit” as part of the build-up into the song. Labyrinth follows in 2013 and continues the move between death metal and symphonic metal, though it receives less favourable reviews than Agony.

King appears in 2016 and further reduces the prominence of the death metal side of the sound, placing the symphonic elements at the centre and pushing guitars into a more background role. Its lead single is “The Fool”. Veleno follows in 2019 and continues the approach of King, while also bringing back some of the band’s earlier technical death metal style on songs such as “Sugar” and including slower, more operatic pieces such as “The Day We’ll Be Gone”.

Line-up and later activity

Paolo Rossi leaves the band in 2024. For the 2024 album Opera, the group uses Veronica Bordacchini for the operatic clean vocals.

Style and classification

Fleshgod Apocalypse is associated with brutal death metal, death metal, symphonic metal and technical death metal. Their work develops from a technical death metal base toward a stronger symphonic and operatic approach, while retaining elements of brutality and complex songwriting.
