Fatima is a Swedish R&B and soul artist based in the UK, born in 1985. She works in neo-soul and related club-influenced styles, and is associated with the London label Eglo Records, run by Floating Points and Alexander Nut.
Career
Fatima Bramma-Sey develops a sound that combines soul, electronic production and improvisation. She becomes known through performances at venues such as Plastic People in London, where her live set leads to her association with Eglo Records. Her singing is marked by a flexible approach to melody and style, and her work draws on both studio production and live performance.
Debut release
Her debut EP, Mindtravelin', presents a short set of songs that blends contemporary beats with retro-soul elements. The release includes collaborations with producers such as Dam-Funk on “Warm Eyes” and Funkineven on “Soul Glo”.
Musical background and influences
Fatima grows up in Sweden in a family with Senegalese and Gambian roots. Her mother owns a boutique in Stockholm that sells African goods, and this exposes her early on to West African music. She also cites 1990s R&B singers including Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Brandy, Mary J. Blige and TLC, alongside funk and soul figures such as George Clinton, Rudy Ray Moore and Betty Davis, as influences on her sound.
Work with Floating Points
She also records with Floating Points on a project described as being made with live instruments in the same room, combining written material with improvised lines and melodies. This work reflects her interest in live energy and dance music, and in the relationship between soul and electronic sounds.
