Everything Everything

Everything Everything is a Manchester-based British band active since 2007. The group’s line-up includes Jonathan Higgs, Jeremy Pritchard, Michael Spearman and Alex Robertshaw, with Alex Niven part of the original formation before leaving in 2009. The band’s members come from Northumberland, Kent and Guernsey, and the group develops a sound rooted in alternative dance, art pop, art rock, dance-pop, dance-punk and indie pop.

Formation and early releases

Everything Everything forms at the University of Salford and through school friendships. Their early line-up consists of Higgs on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Pritchard on bass and vocals, Spearman on drums, and Niven on guitar. They debut with the single “Suffragette Suffragette” in 2008, followed by “Photoshop Handsome” and “MY KZ, UR BF”, each paired with self-made videos. After Niven leaves, Alex Robertshaw joins from Operahouse.

Albums and recognition

The band is nominated for BBC Sound of 2010 and later receives Mercury Prize nominations for their debut album Man Alive and for A Fever Dream. Man Alive is released on Geffen UK in 2010 and is followed by reissued versions of “MY KZ, UR BF” and “Photoshop Handsome”, as well as the singles “Schoolin'” and “Final Form”. After touring and performing orchestral concerts of the album in full, the group returns in 2012 with “Cough Cough”, which gains wide airplay and reaches number 37 in the charts. The single “Kemosabe” follows in January the next year, alongside the album Arc.

In 2015 the band releases “Distant Past”, which is named BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World by Zane Lowe, and then issues the album Get To Heaven. The album’s singles include “Regret”, “Spring / Sun / Winter / Dread” and “No Reptiles”. In 2017 the band announces A Fever Dream with “Can’t Do”; the album later reaches number 5 in the UK Albums Chart and wins Album of the Year at the Music Producers Guild Awards in 2019.

Later releases

Everything Everything release “In Birdsong” in 2020, with a video directed by Higgs. They announce Re-Animator with “Arch Enemy”, followed by “Planets” and “Violent Sun”, each with videos made by Higgs. The album is released later in 2020 and reaches number 5 in the UK Albums Chart. Its final single is “Black Hyena”.

In 2022 the band announces Raw Data Feel with “Bad Friday” and later releases “Teletype” as a second single. The album uses text and imagery generated by an early generative learning language model for parts of its titles, lyrics and artwork, with the band later saying it contributes around 5% of the lyric content and one song title. The same day, they announce the book Caps Lock On, collecting the lyrics to every Everything Everything song to date. Raw Data Feel reaches number 4 in the UK Albums Chart, their highest-charting release.

Their seventh album, Mountainhead, follows in 2024. Higgs says it is written and produced quickly and is made without plug-ins or effects as a reaction to Raw Data Feel. The album has a conceptual frame in which a society creates a mountain by digging a large pit, and the singles “Cold Reactor”, “The Mad Stone” and “The End of the Contender” are released in 2023 and 2024.
