Emmy the Great

Emmy the Great is the stage name of London-based singer-songwriter Emma-Lee Moss, who is born in Hong Kong in 1984 and grows up there before moving to London with her family at the age of 12. She writes and performs in the indie, anti-folk and folk rock area, and her work is closely associated with acoustic singer-songwriter material.

Career

Moss starts performing in 2005 and issues her first release, the Secret Circus EP, the following year. Her early live work includes performances with Lightspeed Champion in 2007, alongside Florence Welch, and she also plays with Noah and the Whale, although she is not a permanent member of either line-up. Her band includes Euan Hinshelwood of Younghusband and Tom Rogerson of Three Trapped Tigers, and one listed member is Gash.

Albums

Her debut full-length album, First Love, is released through Close Harbour in 2009 and is later ranked by The New York Times at number 7 in its list of the best albums of that year. Her second album, Virtue, follows in 2011 and begins as a third-person project before her fiancé’s religious conversion and their break-up lead her to write in a more personal style. A third album, Second Love, appears in 2016.
