Dream Theater
Dream Theater are an American progressive metal band from Boston, active since 1985. Their core line-up includes guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, drummer Mike Portnoy, singer James LaBrie and keyboardist Jordan Rudess. Over the years the band also includes Chris Collins, Charlie Dominici, Kevin Moore, Derek Sherinian, Mike Mangini and Steve Stone among its members.
Formation and early line-up
The band begins in Boston as Majesty, formed by Petrucci, Myung and Portnoy while they are studying at Berklee College of Music. They leave their studies to focus on music and later change their name after a legal dispute. Early vocalists include Chris Collins and Charlie Dominici; Dominici sings on the debut album, When Dream and Day Unite (1989), before leaving the group. The original keyboardist, Kevin Moore, departs in 1994 and is replaced by Derek Sherinian, who is later replaced by Jordan Rudess in 1999.
Albums and musical development
Dream Theater release sixteen studio albums. Their second album, Images and Words (1992), is their highest-selling release and reaches number 61 on the Billboard 200. It is supported by the single “Pull Me Under” and extensive touring, including the live release Live at the Marquee. Later albums such as Awake (1994) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) also chart and attract critical attention.
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) is cited as a notable concept album and marks a return to a more progressive style. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a double album with an extended title track, while Train of Thought (2003) takes a heavier direction. Falling into Infinity (1997) reflects label pressure towards a more accessible sound and is recorded during a period of tension over musical direction.
Labels, releases and recognition
After signing with Mechanic Records, the band release When Dream and Day Unite, but limited promotion and label problems restrict its commercial impact. They later sign to ATCO Records for Images and Words, then move on to Elektra Records, ending that contract with Octavarium (2005). Systematic Chaos (2007) is their first release with Roadrunner Records, one of their listed labels alongside Ytse Jams, Inc.
By 2018, Dream Theater have sold over 12 million records worldwide and received four Grammy Award nominations. They win a Grammy in 2022 for “The Alien” from A View from the Top of the World (2021), which is the band’s first Grammy win. A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011) brings their first Grammy nomination. The band is often described alongside Queensrÿche and Fates Warning as one of the “big three” of progressive metal.
Later history and live work
Mike Portnoy leaves in 2010 and is replaced by Mike Mangini after auditions. The first album with Mangini, A Dramatic Turn of Events, is followed by the self-titled Dream Theater (2013), The Astonishing (2016), Distance Over Time (2019) and A View from the Top of the World (2021). In October 2023, Mangini leaves and Portnoy returns.
The group also issues many live albums, compilations and archival releases, including the Lost Not Forgotten Archives series. They tour internationally and often perform entire albums in concert. In 2025, they release Parasomnia, preceded by “Night Terror”, and the live album Quarantième: Live à Paris, recorded during their 40th anniversary tour.
