Devlin

Devlin is a UK grime MC from Dagenham, born in 1989. He emerges from the East London grime scene and builds a reputation through radio work, mixtapes and live performances, with a style marked by dense, considered lyrics and a distinctive, fast delivery. He is associated with the collective The Movement.

Early career and radio

He first appears on local radio at 13 and spends much of his early development writing and recording with friends and local producers. He works with O.T. Recordings, where he becomes part of a wider group of MCs and producers including Dogzilla, Shotz, Syer, Rachet and Deverlish. He also performs regularly on pirate radio, moving from Flava FM to Rinse FM, where he gains a strong response from listeners. He appears in sets with DJ Slimzee and also performs live radio sets with DJ Logan Sama on Kiss 100 FM and DJ Cameo on BBC 1Xtra.

Mixtapes and releases

Devlin features on several O.T. Recordings projects, including the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham Mixtape, which appears in 2006 and includes the track “Ghetto Kyote Remix” freestyle. That track receives wider play on pirate and commercial radio, including Rinse, 1Xtra and Kiss FM. In the same period he appears on releases such as April Shower and Firein, and features on Broad Street Stories and the Shot City Mixtape. His first solo mixtape, Tales From The Crypt, appears in 2006 and includes collaborations with members of O.T and The Movement. Later projects mentioned include Tempo Specialists, Blood, Sweat and Beers and the Devlin EP.

The Movement and wider scene

He later joins The Movement, a grime collective that includes Ghetto, Scorcher and Wretch 32. The group’s Tempo Specialists release in 2007 brings together some of the scene’s leading MCs and producers. Devlin’s work is described as gaining support across the UK and Europe, and he performs outside London as well as in Amsterdam and Northampton.

Style and standing

Devlin is known for intelligent, evocative lyrics and a cult following among grime listeners. His work stands out in a field that often produces more routine, repetitive MCs, and his progression comes through early radio exposure, studio work, mixtapes and collaborations within the grime network.
