Derrick Carter is a house DJ and producer from Compton, Chicago, born in 1969. He grows out of Chicago’s house scene and becomes a notable figure in the city’s underground dance community before building a wider reputation in Europe, where he works extensively and gains a large following among dance-music listeners.

Early life and Chicago background

Carter is born and raised in the western suburbs and becomes interested in music from a young age. As a teenager, Chicago house music draws him in, and he develops into a regular presence in the underground dance scene. He also works in dance-music specialist record shops such as Gramaphone and plays parties while building his DJ skills at home over several years.

DJ work

He later holds regular DJ residencies at Shelter, Foxy’s and Smart Bar. He does not play locally as often as before, but when he does he draws large crowds. His DJ style is rooted in house but moves freely beyond it, bringing in old-school disco, soul, jazz and other influences as he goes.

Recording projects

In 1988 Carter, fellow DJ Mark Farina and friend Chris Nazuka release an EP as Symbols & Instruments. The record has an influence on the emerging ambient techno movement in England and helps establish Carter as an international name in the dance-music underground, even though it does not become a commercial hit.

He goes on to work under several names, including Sound Patrol, Rednail and releases under his own name. As Sound Patrol, he issues his first album, Sweetened – No Lemon, which is noted for a soulful, low-key roughness that stands apart from the more machine-like dance music of the period. His early solo releases include I Think of You as Rednail, followed by N? Pschidt and Hope under his own name. N? Pschidt includes the tracks Dreaming Again and Boompty Boomp Theme, the latter described as especially slinky and funky. Hope also attracts attention from DJs and the press, and his Classic album is anticipated after that release.

Style and reputation

Carter’s work is described as pioneering and innovative, with critical acclaim marking him out as one of the important figures in dance music. He spends much of his time working in Europe, where he becomes especially well known among club audiences.
