Deacon Blue

Deacon Blue are a Scottish pop and rock group from Glasgow, formed in 1985. Their line-up includes Ricky Ross, Lorraine McIntosh, James Prime, Dougie Vipond, Ewen Vernal and Graeme Kelling. The band remains active and is associated with alternative rock, dream pop, indie rock, pop, pop rock and rock.

Formation and name

The band takes its name from the Steely Dan song “Deacon Blues”. Ricky Ross, who comes from Dundee, is the frontman and writes most of the group’s songs. Lorraine McIntosh joins in 1987 as a vocalist and later marries Ross.

Early albums and breakthrough

Deacon Blue’s first album, Raintown, appears in 1987 and is produced by Jon Kelly. It produces the singles “Dignity”, “Chocolate Girl” and “Loaded”. The album is closely associated with Glasgow and is often described as a concept album built around life in a deprived city and the wish for something better.

The group’s second album, When The World Knows Your Name, releases in 1988 and becomes their most commercially successful record. It reaches the top of the UK album chart and includes “Real Gone Kid”, their first UK top ten single, as well as “Wages Day” and “Fergus Sings The Blues”.

Later 1980s and 1990s work

After their early success, the band releases Fellow Hoodlums in 1991, again with Jon Kelly producing. The album receives stronger critical attention. In 1993 they follow it with Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, a more experimental release that is praised by critics but does not match earlier commercial success. A greatest hits compilation follows in 1994, and the band splits that year after Dougie Vipond leaves to pursue television work.

Reunion and later releases

Deacon Blue reunite for a gig in 1999, which leads to Walking Back Home. They then release Homesick in 2001. The group continues after the death of Graeme Kelling in 2004 and returns to the studio in 2006 to record three new tracks for a singles collection, including “Bigger than Dynamite”.

Further albums follow with The Hipsters in 2012, A New House in 2014, Believers in 2016, City of Love in 2020 and Riding On The Tide Of Love in 2021. In 2023, the band releases the greatest hits set All The Old 45's and the box set You Can Have It All.

Standing and recognition

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Deacon Blue become one of the UK’s top-selling bands. Their early work, especially Raintown and When The World Knows Your Name, remains central to their reputation.
