Danny Byrd

Danny Byrd is a drum and bass and liquid funk producer and DJ from Bath, in the South West of England, and is based in the United Kingdom. Born in 1979, he works in the drum and bass scene from the late 1990s and is associated with Hospital Records. He is seen as a pioneer of soulful, vocal liquid funk.

Early releases and Hospital Records

Byrd’s first release appears in 1998 on DJ Ron’s Piccasso imprint, with “Manhattan”. He joins Hospital Records in 2000, where he makes a wider impact with the singles “Do it Again” and “Changes”. These releases establish a style that mixes drum and bass with elements of soulful house, garage and R&B.

Remixes and wider production work

He remixes London Elektricity’s “Wishing Well” for the Plastic Surgery 2 compilation, using vocal chopping associated with Todd Edwards. The remix becomes a strong liquid funk favourite. Other remixes include High Contrast’s “Music is Everything” on Hospital and Tungsten and Morph’s “Expand your Mind” on the Sound in Motion label.

In 2002, Byrd works outside drum and bass on garage, breaks and R&B production. He returns to Hospital in 2003 and 2004 on the Weapons of Mass Creation compilations with “Planet Music” featuring MC Foxy and “The Winchester Club”.

Singles, album work and other labels

In 2005, Hospital offers him an album deal and he releases “Soul Function” and “Doghill” as singles, with support from Annie Mac, Bailey, Bryan G, High Contrast and others. The record deal also allows him to work with selected labels outside Hospital. In 2006 he releases “French Quarter” on V Recordings, “Round & Round” on Total Science’s Advanced imprint, and “Rise Again” on Spearhead.

DJ work and teaching

Byrd performs as a DJ in cities including Los Angeles, Paris, Munich and Vienna, as well as at Hospitality nights in London and elsewhere in the UK, including Herbal and Heaven. Alongside producing and DJing, he runs music production seminars and online tuition in the UK for aspiring producers.
