Da Captain Trips

Da Captain Trips are an Italian instrumental band formed in May 2009 by three musicians from other groups: Cavitos on guitar, who comes from Oak's Mary; Sappah on drums, who comes from Midryasi; and Peppone on bass, who comes from Shoo. The members know one another from concerts and share an interest in music, old vinyl records and vintage instruments.

Formation and name

The band begins with an unplanned rehearsal session in which they start recording and play as a jam, with no set material prepared. Their first recorded session is the long jam Leaving the Mainland. The group name refers to Stephen King's The Dark Tower, where Captain Trips is a deadly flu, although the band uses the name for its sound rather than the story's meaning.

Style and working method

Their music is built in rehearsal through improvisation. Every practice session is recorded, and the band develops songs from the strongest parts of these jams. Their performances are also improvised and recorded, so the material can change according to the place, audience and atmosphere. Their influences range from 1960s and 1970s psychedelic rock to instrumental bands of both earlier and later periods. Their listed styles include instrumental, jam band, psychedelic rock, space rock and stoner metal, with tags also identifying them with stoner rock, fuzz rock and jam.

Recordings and activity

The band's promo is recorded and mixed in one day at Elfo Studio in Italy in February 2010 by Da Captain Trips and Alberto Callegari, and it is released on Desert Fox Records. In 2010 they play many shows in Italy and support acts including Yawning Man and Samsara Blues Experiment. They continue as an active group from 2009 onward.
