Culture Shock

Culture Shock is James Pountney, a drum and bass producer and DJ from the United Kingdom, based in London and signed to RAM Records. His recorded output sits in drum and bass, and he develops a reputation for detailed, club-focused production shaped by a classically trained musical background and early exposure to jungle on pirate radio. He also receives mentorship from Dom & Roland, which helps him refine his production style and establish himself in the scene.

Career and releases

Pountney’s first release appears on Moving Shadow in 2004, after which he signs exclusively to RAM Records. Over a long run on the label, he releases tracks that become widely associated with the genre’s club and radio circuits, including Troglodyte, City Lights, Have It All, There For You, Get Physical, Take Control, Bunker and Renaissance. He also initiates The Sequence Series in late 2017, a run of singles that leads to the album Sequence, described as his most complete work in that period.

Live activity and recognition

His live work includes DJ tours across North America, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and Europe. He appears at major festivals including Glastonbury, EDC Las Vegas, Tomorrowland and Creamfields, and hosts Sequence in a sold-out room at fabric in London. His music also receives support from Annie Mac and Radio 1, including a track that spends five weeks on the station’s playlist.
