Cody ChesnuTT

Cody ChesnuTT is an American musician from Atlanta, Georgia, and his work draws on rock, funk, soul, hip-hop, blues and jazz, with a strong neo-soul character. He is associated with the members of The Crosswalk.

Early work and recording style

ChesnuTT releases The Headphone Masterpiece as a double LP in 2002. He records the album in his bedroom studio, which he calls The Sonic Promiseland. His writing and presentation are marked by a pronounced sense of ego and audacity, and he insists on capitalising the final two letters of his surname.

Breakthrough and collaboration with The Roots

His closest approach to mainstream recognition comes in 2002 when The Roots remake his song “The Seed” for their album Phrenology. The new version, titled “The Seed (2.0)”, distinguishes itself from ChesnuTT’s original recording. ChesnuTT sings and plays guitar on the track, and he also appears in its video, which receives heavy rotation on MTV and BET. He also appears in an “MTV You Hear It First” segment.

Later releases

ChesnuTT issues the six-track EP Black Skin No Value and later releases the full-length album Landing on a Hundred. His discography also includes The Last Adam and My Love Divine Degree.
