Birth of Joy

Birth of Joy is a Dutch rock band from Utrecht, active since 2005. The group performs psychedelic rock and is described as a trio made up of Gertjan Gutman, Bob Hogenelst and Kevin Stunnenberg.

Style and influences

The band plays a form of psychedelic organ rock and roll with influences from blues and hard rock. Their sound also draws on stoner rock, grunge and punk, and they are linked to comparisons with groups such as MC5, The Doors and Pink Floyd. The line-up centres on organ, drums and guitar, with Gertjan Gutman on organ, Bob Hogenelst on drums and Kevin Stunnenberg on vocals and guitar.

Recording and releases

The album Prisoner is recorded and produced in November 2013 by Joris Wolff, who has worked with De Staat, Within Temptation and Mister and Mississippi. It is mastered by Brian Lucey, whose credits include The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, David Lynch and Dr. John. The album is released worldwide in March 2014.

Live activity and label deals

Birth of Joy plays a heavy live schedule, with 92 shows across Europe and the United States in 2013. The band has worldwide record deals with Long Branch Records/SPV, Grand Palais/Modulor and Suburban, and a publishing deal with Talpa Music.
