At the Drive-In

At the Drive-In is an American post-hardcore band from El Paso, United States, formed in 1994 and active until 2018. The group’s lineup changes over the years include Bernie Rincon, Kenny Hopper, Jarrett Wrenn, Jim Ward, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Davy Simmons, Omar Rodríguez-López, Adam Amparan, Ryan Sawyer, Ben Rodriguez, Tony Hajjar, Paul Hinojos and Keeley Davis. Its core, settled after early changes, becomes a five-piece with Bixler-Zavala on vocals, Rodríguez-López on guitar and vocals, Jim Ward, Hinojos on bass and Hajjar on drums.

Recorded work and style

The band’s sound falls within alternative rock, art punk, emo and post-hardcore. It releases three studio albums and five EPs before its first split in 2001. Its third and final album before that breakup, Relationship of Command (2000), receives significant recognition and is widely regarded as a landmark recording.

Breakups, side projects and reunions

After the 2001 split, Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López form The Mars Volta, while Jim Ward, Paul Hinojos and Tony Hajjar form Sparta. At the Drive-In reunites in January 2012 and plays Coachella and Lollapalooza that year. The group reunites again in 2016, this time without Ward, who is replaced by Sparta guitarist and occasional lead vocalist Keeley Davis.

Later activity

The band releases its fourth studio album, in•ter a•li•a, in 2017. In 2018, it headlines the Neon Desert Music Festival in its home city of El Paso before announcing an indefinite hiatus later that year.
