Young Man

Young Man is the project of Colin Caulfield, a musician from Chicago. His work is associated with dream pop, folk and indie, and he is also linked with the BIRP and 00s tags.

Background and style

Caulfield is an English/French literature major, and he begins as a drummer before moving into singing and guitar. His songs use lean guitar lines, strong melodies and close vocal harmonies, with a sound that draws comparisons to artists such as Animal Collective and Ariel Pink. He also makes cover versions, including a version of Deerhunter’s “Rainwater Cassette Exchange”.

Boy and the Young Man concept

The first Young Man release is Boy, a set of songs about growing up and not yet knowing what it means to be a man. Tracks mentioned from that release include “Five” and “Up So Fast”, which show the project’s mix of tenderness, restless rhythm and intimate production. Caulfield describes the project as a concept centred on time, love and loss, with songs that are personal but also intended to speak more generally.

Notable recognition and future releases

Bradford Cox of Deerhunter praises Caulfield’s cover of “Rainwater Cassette Exchange”, describing it as stronger than the original and noting its emotional effect. Caulfield also plans Young Man as a sequence of loosely linked records, with the project framed around shifting characters and autobiographical material.
