xxxy is a Manchester, United Kingdom producer, born Rupert Taylor, who works in UK garage, future garage, dubstep, electronic, uk funky and minimal. He first records under the name Forensix, or Forensix (mcr), before changing to xxxy after his first release, because there is already a dubstep artist called Forensics and the added “mcr” refers to Manchester.

Career

After a break to focus on improving his production, he returns in 2009 as xxxy. That year he releases the Reflections EP on Manchester label Mindset and Science Fiction/651 on Formant Recordings. By late 2009 his sound is increasingly shaped by house music, which takes up a larger part of his record collection.

In 2010 he releases a split 12-inch on Infrasonics, including the Baltimore-influenced track “Blue Flashing Lights” and “Know You”, a funky roller that appears in FACT magazine’s tunes of 2010 list. Later that year he issues the garage-influenced EP Every Step Forward on Fortified Audio. In January 2011 he releases “You Always Start it/Ordinary Things” on Ten Thousand Yen; “Ordinary Things” is selected by Pitchfork as best new tune of the day.

Labels, releases and collaborations

xxxy is signed to various labels and builds a reputation through releases on Infrasonics, Fortified Audio, Mindset and Formant Recordings. His work also appears on the Fabric compilation Elevator Music. Additional releases are planned for labels including Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen, Well Rounded, Orca and All City, and he also records remixes for Tri Angle and the Count & Sinden.

DJ work

As a DJ, xxxy makes mixes for FACT, BBQ and URB and plays dates across the UK and Europe. His output is associated with the more propulsive side of UK garage, with a particular focus on dancefloor rhythm and bass-driven club music.
