X

X is a punk rock band from Los Angeles, United States, formed in 1977 and active from 1977 to the present. The group’s original line-up consists of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist-bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake. Its listed members also include Dave Alvin and Tony Gilkyson.

The band releases seven studio albums between 1980 and 1993. After a period of inactivity in the mid-to-late 1990s, X reunites in the early 2000s and continues to tour. It gains limited mainstream success, but it is influential on punk rock and also on Americana and folk rock.

In 1991, music critic Robert Hilburn identifies X as one of the most influential bands of its era. In 2003, its first two studio albums, Los Angeles and Wild Gift, are included by Rolling Stone among the 500 greatest albums of all time. Los Angeles is also ranked 91st on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1980s.
