Woman E

Woman E are a London pop group active since 2010. The act is a duo made up of Ria Berlin and OoverMatic, with Berlin born in London and OoverMatic born in Berlin. Their work sits around pop, electronica, high-energy textures and what they describe in contrasting terms such as “decadence and decay” and “melancholy disco”.

The group set out to bring a point of view back into pop music and to move beyond lyrical clichés. They frame their approach as subversive pop, combining strong choruses and entertainment with lyrics that can be serious in a less immediate way. Their music also draws on the different backgrounds of its two members: Berlin cites strong female vocalists such as Kate Bush and Björk, while OoverMatic brings an interest in Kraftwerk, disco and Leonard Cohen.

Before forming the group, OoverMatic works as musical director for Comme des Garçon. He says that experience teaches him the value of friction as a creative force, and the duo present themselves as working through opposites rather than similarity. Woman E describe their music as pop with a point of view, positioned between electronica, dance music and nihilistic balladry.

Their song “Few And Far Between” features in the 2011 Greek dark comedy film Alps, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
