Willy Moon is a singer and songwriter from Wellington, born in 1989. He leaves New Zealand at 18 and builds a sound that mixes rock and roll, rockabilly, noise pop, indie and elements of rhythm and blues, hip hop and funk.

He describes his music as a blend of Bo Diddley and Swizz Beatz, and his work is often framed as retro without sounding like a simple revival. His songs are short and driven by punk energy, and he presents himself as hard to place in any single genre.

Moon’s first single, I Wanna Be Your Man, introduces this style. He also releases Yeah Yeah, which appears on BBC Radio 1, and has five songs out in total in this period.

He joins Third Man Records, the label run by Jack White, and shares with White an interest in 1950s sounds and older American rock, including records from the 1920s and 1930s. Moon is named one of Q Magazine’s “Faces of 2012”.
