White Hinterland

White Hinterland is the performance name of Casey Dienel, an American singer-songwriter and pianist from the United States. Born in 1985, she first releases music under her own name before recording as White Hinterland. Her debut album, Wind-Up Canary, appears in 2006 on Hush Records.

Under the White Hinterland name, Dienel releases Phylactery Factory in 2008 on Dead Oceans. She is based in Portland, Oregon, and records and performs there after moving from the east coast with bandmate Shawn Creeden. For the follow-up album, she works without her piano and uses drum machines and synthesizers instead.

White Hinterland’s second album, Kairos, is issued by Dead Oceans in 2010. The song “Icarus” from that record is used in commercials and films. Her music is associated with indie pop, folk pop and jazz, and she is also described as a female vocalist and pianist.
