Warfare

Warfare is a British heavy metal group from Newcastle, England, active from 1982 to 1993. The band sits within NWOBHM and speed metal, and its sound is also associated with metal punk and hardcore.

History

The group forms in the early 1980s. Its debut album, Pure Filth, appears in 1984 and is produced by Algy Ward of Tank. Ward also guests on the record, alongside members of Venom. The follow-up, Metal Anarchy, appears in 1986 and is produced by Lemmy of Motörhead, with guitar contributions from Wurzel of Motörhead.

Warfare’s next album, Mayhem, Fuckin’ Mayhem, is produced by Cronos of Venom and sells over 40,000 copies. A Conflict of Hatred follows and includes guest appearances from Mantas of Venom, Marti Craggs of Lindisfarne, and former Prelude vocalist Irene Hume.

In 1989 the band leaves Neat Records and signs to Hammer Film Music for Hammer Horror. Because of poor promotion, it later re-records the album with Algy Ward playing guitars on several tracks and releases that version on Silver Screen Records. That later edition also includes a classical piece co-written with former Tygers Of Pan Tang guitarist Fred Purser, which is later used in the soundtrack to Vlad The Impaler.

The band then starts to break up, and by mid-1993 Evo is involved in the project Warhead with Wurzel and Algy Ward.
