Walk Off the Earth is a Canadian indie pop group from Burlington, Ontario, active since 2006. The line-up includes Gianni Luminati, Joel Cassady, Sarah Blackwood, Pete Kirkwood and Marshall, with Mike Taylor also listed among the members. Blackwood is also known for her work in the psychobilly band The Creepshow.

Style and approach

The band becomes widely known for low-budget music videos featuring covers and original songs, and it builds its audience independently without support from record labels, booking agents or management in its early period. Its recorded music and videos are produced by Gianni Luminati, who is also a multi-instrumentalist.

Instruments and online presence

Walk Off the Earth is particularly associated with cover versions of popular songs on YouTube and with the use of unusual instruments such as the ukulele and theremin, together with looping samples.

Releases

The band’s first album, Smooth Like Stone On a Beach, appears in 2007, followed by My Rock in 2010. R.E.V.O. follows in 2013 and Sing It All Away in 2015. The album HERE WE GO! is also part of the band’s catalogue, and the single “I’ll Be There” is released ahead of it. “Mike’s Song” appears as a tribute to Mike Taylor.

Career notes

The band later signs a recording contract with Columbia Records. After Mike Taylor’s death in 2018, it continues touring internationally in 2019. Ryan Marshall later leaves the group.
