Voxhaul Broadcast

Voxhaul Broadcast is a group from San Clemente and Silver Lake, active from 2006 to 2012. The band forms around four childhood friends: David Dennis on guitar and vocals, Anthony Aguiar on guitar, organ and backing vocals, Phillip Munsey II on bass, and Kurt Allen on drums.

Style and early recordings

The group plays indie rock with rock and soul influences, drawing on artists such as James Brown, Al Green, The Beatles and Donovan. It develops a sound described through the combination of smart lyrics and catchy rhythms, with a raw live energy that reflects the band’s preference for performance over studio polishing.

Their debut EP, Rotten Apples, is recorded and mixed live in a single day, with recording by Dwayne Larring, mixing by Dave Larring, and mastering by Mark Chalecki at Capitol Mastering. Before that release, the band records mainly at home, but the live EP marks a deliberate move toward capturing the imperfections and immediacy of a performance.

Career and releases

After signing with Retone Records in early 2007, Voxhaul Broadcast begins attracting wider attention. The band is named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the “buzz bands” to watch in 2008, and the group is also described as having a “soul-infused rock” sound. Their debut EP contains eight songs and is presented as a response to what the band sees as the formulaic side of the indie rock scene.

Live activity

Voxhaul Broadcast appears at CMJ, Sundance, Noise Pop in San Francisco, and SXSW, and also plays regular Monday shows at Spaceland in Los Angeles. The band has UK dates scheduled later in 2008, adding to a live profile built around childhood collaboration and a strong preference for playing as a band in real time.
