Voodoo Johnson

Voodoo Johnson is a Birmingham classic rock band active since 2006. The group forms part of the British hard rock and classic rock scene and builds its reputation around a heavy, guitar-led sound.

Background and releases

The band forms in Birmingham in 2007 according to one account, though its active period begins in 2006. It first draws wider attention with two EPs before releasing its debut album, 10,000 Horses, in 2010. Romesh Dodangoda produces the album. The record receives critical acclaim from music magazines including Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound and Big Cheese. Classic Rock Magazine describes the band as having the potential to become “global gods”.

Radio play and live work

Voodoo Johnson gets regular radio support from Johnny Doom on Kerrang! Radio and Bruce Dickinson on BBC Radio 6. It also appears on covermount CDs for both Metal Hammer and Classic Rock, including the latter’s “2010 Ones to Watch” selection. Live support slots include shows with The Answer and Duff McKagan’s Loaded, and the band shares stages with Motörhead and Monster Magnet at Hard Rock Hell and Guilfest.

Collaborations and later activity

The band attracts the attention of Europe, which invites Voodoo Johnson to support it on the UK Balls ’N Banners tour. Brian Tatler of Diamond Head also collaborates on the track “Black Skies Mist”. The group announces an EP titled Black Powder Mother Loader and confirms festival appearances including Hard Rock Hell V, Guilfest and Download Festival.
