Violons Barbares
Violons Barbares is a trio from France that brings together Balkan melodies, driving rhythms and throat singing. The group has two fiddle players and a percussionist, and its sound is built around instruments and techniques drawn from Mongolian and Bulgarian traditions.
Line-up and instruments
Dandarvaanchig Enkhjargal, from Mongolia, performs overtone singing and plays the morin khuur, also known as the horse-head fiddle. Dimitar Gougov, from Bulgaria, plays the gadulka, a bowed instrument with three melodic strings and eleven resonant strings. Fabien Guyot, the French percussionist and drummer, uses a wide range of objects and instruments for rhythm and sound, including an African tambourine, salad bowls and pots.
Style
The trio is associated with world fusion and world music, combining fiddle-based melodies with percussion and vocal techniques that draw on different folk traditions.
