Violet Youth

Violet Youth are a US rock band from New York, active from 1981 to 2011. The group is associated with alternative rock, art rock, experimental rock, grunge, indie rock and no wave, and it is linked to Sonic Youth Archive and Sonic Death.

The band includes Anne DeMarinis, Richard Edson, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Bob Bert, Jim Sclavunos, Steve Shelley, Jim O’Rourke and Mark Ibold.

Background

Violet Youth practice at Moolah Rouge studios in Stockport and play live in and around Manchester, where they build a local following. Their shows include support slots for Nine Black Alps, appearances at Manchester Pride and MAPS Festival, and dates in venues in Camden, Hammersmith, Sheffield, Blackburn, Southport and Manchester.

Recording and performances

The band releases its first single, Carla’s Song, independently in CD form and online in 2010. The single receives airplay on BBC Manchester Introducing, and the band performs for BBC Radio Manchester at the Ruby Lounge for a 40 years of broadcasting celebration, supporting May 68. In 2010 it also supports Sham 69 and The Chapman Family.

Style

A review describes the single as spoken-word lyrics in a strong British accent set over agitated post-punk, and the band says it sits somewhere between Magazine and Pulp.
