Vester Koza

Vester Koza is an electronic musician and DJ from North West England, based in London. The name is adapted from an obscure range of effects units intended for guitarists. He works in styles including IDM, ambient, lo-fi, dub and ambient dub.

Early releases and critical response

In 2013, Koza releases a series of self-released EPs that attract wide critical attention. His music is noted for detailed sound design and for requiring close listening, with commentary focusing on its grainy textures and compressed, immersive character.

Houndstooth and concept releases

In 2016, Koza signs to fabric’s Houndstooth label. His first release for the label is the OTR EP, which follows the earlier PRISN EP. PRISN references the NSA spying programme and uses titles adapted from Android and Apple commands. OTR continues that conceptual direction, drawing on open-source encryption and the genetic modification of farmed animals. The release is described as moving between alienation and warmth and as reflecting privacy in a heavily monitored world.

Reception

Koza’s work is associated with restrained, withdrawn production that rewards concentrated listening. It is also linked to the sound of 1990s IDM, especially in the way it balances emotional distance with warmth.
