Ulysses

Ulysses is a techno and electro artist associated with New York’s electro scene and with the Scatalogics Records label. He begins by running his university’s first techno radio show and becomes a key figure in the city’s electroclash-era club culture, helping shape an eclectic New York techno and electro DJ style that later receives wider attention. His DJ sets take him internationally, including appearances in Berlin, Paris, Hong Kong and New York, and he also plays at PS1’s Warm-Up series in support of the Scissor Sisters.

DJ work and club promotion

Ulysses also starts one of New York’s first large-scale electro party series, Regressive Technologies. The series features artists including Arthur Baker, Mark Kamins, Alexander Robotnick, Miss Kitten and the Hacker, Ectomorph, Perspects, Adult., John Selway, DJ Unknown of Fischerspooner, and Tommie Sunshine. Alongside this, he works as a prolific producer and remix artist rather than only as a promoter or DJ.

Recordings and style

His releases cover a wide range of electronic styles, including Detroit techno, quirky electro-house, techno-pop, deep tech-house, Italo-disco and NRG-influenced techno-house. His work appears on labels such as Teknotika, Guidance, Plastic City Suburbia, Tuning Spork Records, Memory Boy and Lasergun Records. He also releases solo material on Xylophone Jones and Play’s Cool Records.

Neurotic Drum Band and collaborations

Ulysses records with John Selway as Neurotic Drum Band, with releases on Plant, Sodium and NDB Records. He also remixes Le Tigre, Scissor Sisters and Fischerspooner. Scatalogics Records, where he is a principal artist, also releases music by Håkan Lidbo, James Duncan, Todd Sines, John Selway and Alexander Robotnick.

Other associated act

The name Ulysses is also used by a Boston-based duo whose first project is Entendre, described as a trippy, tranquil and aggressive concept release. The same name is used by a Dutch progressive rock and metal band formed in 1998, but the electronic artist Ulysses remains the figure linked to tech house, electro and Scatalogics Records.
