Ufomammut
Ufomammut is an Italian doom metal band from Tortona, Italy, active since 1999. The group is made up of Urlo, Poia, Vita and Alessandro Levrero. Its sound is described through doom metal, heavy psych, psychedelic and stoner metal, and it is also associated with psychedelic sludge, sludge rock and space rock.
Formation and line-up
The band forms in Tortona in 1999 as a trio: Urlo handles vocals, bass and synths, Poia plays guitars and synths, and Vita plays drums. Alessandro Levrero is also listed as a member. The name is associated with a power-trio setup from the start, built around heavy guitar, bass, drums and synthesiser textures.
Sound and development
Ufomammut develops a distinctive style built on repetitive riffs, dense atmospheres and heavy, psychedelic textures. Its early work includes Godlike Snake, described as a more primal acid-leaning release, followed by Snailking, which moves toward a darker and more developed sound. Lucifer Songs marks another shift, combining experimentation with the band’s established identity.
Idolum continues that approach with monolithic riffs and psychedelic, magmatic sound, while Eve presents a single long atmospheric piece divided into five movements. That album is presented as a homage to the first woman on Earth and the rebellion against her creator for giving knowledge to humankind. The band’s releases also feature vintage electronic textures, sinister atmospheres and expansive spatial passages.
Releases and activity
By 2026, Ufomammut has released 11 full-length albums, with Hidden noted as the most recent. The group remains active from 1999 to the present. Its catalogue is associated with a steady development from raw, heavy material toward more layered and exploratory forms.
Live performance and recognition
Ufomammut plays across Europe and reaches the US West Coast in 2009. It appears at festivals including Roadburn, Hellfest and Assymetry, and it shares stages with acts such as Down, Baroness, Lento, Motorpsycho and Orange Goblin. Its live presentation is supported by the visual work of Malleus, an internationally known rock art collective responsible for the band’s graphic and video identity.
