Train

Train is a US pop rock band from San Francisco, formed in 1994 and active to the present. The group is associated with alternative rock, piano rock, pop, pop rock and rock.

Band history

Train first reaches mainstream success with its self-titled debut album, which includes the single “Meet Virginia”. Its 2001 album Drops of Jupiter features “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)”, which wins two Grammy Awards in 2002 and helps the album reach double platinum certification. The band’s third studio album, My Private Nation, follows in 2003 and is certified platinum in the United States; it includes “Calling All Angels”.

After Rob Hotchkiss and Charlie Colin leave, Train releases For Me, It’s You in 2006 with Brandon Bush on keyboards and Johnny Colt on bass. The album receives a generally positive critical response but does not sell well, and the band then pauses recording new music for three years.

Later releases

Train returns in late 2009 with Save Me, San Francisco. Its singles include the 6× platinum “Hey, Soul Sister”, “If It’s Love” and “Marry Me”, which reach numbers 3, 34 and 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album is certified gold by both the RIAA and ARIA.

In 2012 the band releases California 37, led by “Drive By”, which reaches number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becomes a Top 10 hit in the UK. Later albums include Bulletproof Picasso (2014), Christmas in Tahoe (2015), Train Does Led Zeppelin II (2016), A Girl, a Bottle, a Boat (2017) and AM Gold.

The band’s lineup has included Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford, Scott Underwood, Charlie Colin, Brandon Bush, Johnny Colt and Drew Shoals. Train is also associated with a later lineup including Taylor Locke, Hector Maldonado, Jerry Becker and Matt Musty. The group sells over 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide.
