Top Buzz

Top Buzz are a British DJ and MC group from London, active from 1988 to 2023. The line-up comprises Jason Kaye, Patrick McPhee and Mikee B. The group forms in Tottenham, north London, and begins with MC Patrick McPhee, known as Mad P, and DJ Mikee B before Jason Kaye joins several years later.

Style and role in rave culture

Top Buzz perform at rave events through the 1990s and are among the acts that help popularise the darker side of jungle techno as it emerges from hardcore rave in 1992. They are also associated with the early use of the term jungle techno. Their music is described through the genres breakbeat hardcore, jungle and rave.

Releases and events

The group releases the Living in Darkness EP on Basement Records in 1993. They appear as headline performers at events including Amnesia House, Fantazia, Universe and Obsession. A notable element of their performance style is Patrick McPhee’s ragga MCing, which draws on Jamaican dancehall.

Later activity

The group later falls out and then reforms in the 21st century to play oldskool hardcore events across Britain.
