Tom Wilson

Tom Wilson is a Scottish dance music artist, born in Scotland in 1951 and active in the Scottish club and radio scene. He dies in Edinburgh in 2004.

Radio work and DJ career

He is best remembered for Steppin' Out, a dance music show that begins in 1985 on Forth FM and runs for 14 years. The programme reaches listeners across East and Central Scotland and gains a wide following well beyond its broadcast area, with tapes circulating internationally. A later spin-off, Bonus Beats, airs on Forth FM in the mid-1990s and gives local DJs a weekly platform for hour-long mixes. Wilson also works as a club DJ at events and venues including Awesome 101, Fantazia, Rezerection and The Fubar.

Production and releases

Wilson also works as a music producer. His track Techno Cat becomes a UK Top 40 hit, charts in several European countries, and continues to appear on compilation albums. He also compiles the Bouncin' Back and Bouncin' Beats compilation series.

Later career and other activities

After working at other Scottish radio stations including Beat 106 and Real Radio, he returns to Radio Forth in 2003 as head of music for Forth One and Forth 2. He presents two weekly programmes there, including Tom Wilson's Old Skool on Sunday evenings. He is also a member of the Discogs community and communicates with fans through his own website.

Death and legacy

Wilson dies on Thursday 25 March 2004 after a short illness and a heart attack. He is remembered for his long contribution to the Scottish dance music scene. His management is handled by Ian Robertson, who also produces his Steppin' Out record show.
